Ethos

To promote the voice of green-minded young people within the Green Party and throughout Aotearoa.

Principles

The Young Greens commit to the Green Party Charter and Principles. We recognise that Te Tiriti o Waitangi was the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand and aim to uphold the principles of ecological wisdom, social justice, appropriate decision making and non-violence.

Main goals

  • To foster Young Greens and their growth within the Green Party

  • To communicate Green kaupapa and issues to youth

  • To support the election of Young Greens to Parliament, local bodies and other democratic organisations

  • To increase Green Party influence in Parliament, local bodies and other democratic organisations

Activities

  • Meet annually around Waitangi weekend – the last two years at Jeanette Fitzsimons' farm

  • Hang with Green MPs – at Parliament and around the country

  • Campaign actively on issues locally and nationally

  • Attend Green Party conferences

  • Befriend exciting like-minded people

Structure

The Young Greens are a nation-wide organisation which is made up from a number of smaller sub-groups, including networks in cities, and on school and university campuses. These networks are semi-autonomous, and all make decisions using consensus – ensuring everyone's voice is heard.

We are coordinated nationally by the Young Greens Executive which meets once a month on the phone or via Skype. It consists of a male and female Co-Convenor, one person from each of the nine provinces around the country – called a Young Green Provincial Executive Networker – and various other people holding roles such as Secretary and Treasurer. The Co-Convenors coordinate the Young Greens Executive and are a national point of contact, and the Provincial Networkers represent their provinces on the Executive and help to coordinate activities in their local areas. These roles are elected at the Young Greens AGM every February. But of course any Young Green is welcome to go on the Young Greens Executive email list and contribute to our monthly calls.
